The sooty shearwater Puffinus griseus is listed in the 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as 'near threatened'. Each year it goes on a 64,000 kilometre journey from breeding colonies in New Zealand to areas off Japan, Alaska or California. It is the longest recorded migration of any animal.
